NECKLACE FOR COURAGE

dove6-1.jpgHELPING TO FIGHT BREAST CANCER WITH DOVES - A VERY SPECIAL NECKLACE

Proceeds from the sale of this necklace go the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.

This special necklace was designed over a period of months with great care and consideration for the courageous women who have fought the disease and won, those who are fighting it today, and as a tribute to those who have lost their battle. My goal was to create something that would be beautiful and portray spirit and promise for the future. I want women and girls to feel good wearing it and giving it as a gift.

The necklace is made up of three distinctive elements. The main component is the circular charm entitled 'Peace'. This image of three doves was designed by Jen Delyth, who has graciously given me permission to use her design for this piece and explains its meaning here:

'Among many mythologies the dove appears as the feminine symbol of soul, wisdom, re-birth and harmony. In the ancient world, the concept of harmony was close to healing. Images of doves were offered to the Celtic healer-deities of thermal springs, multiple stone figures of doves were offered to the curative spirits presiding over shrines. Like ravens, doves were perceived as oracular birds, perhaps because of their distinctive call'. (original text and design by Jen Delyth ©1992)

Other commonly held interpretations of the dove include the Holy Spirit and spirituality. In Slavic culture, the soul turns into a dove at death. In Romanesque art, it represents the soul. The dove was sacred to Athena as a symbol of the renewal of life. In China it represents longevity and orderliness. In Christianity, the Holy Ghost of the Trinity is often portrayed as a dove. This image was chosen for its symmetry and grace as well as its spiritual significance. It is also encased in a circle, symbolizing wholeness and eternity, no beginning and no end.

The second element, the pine cone, represents re-birth, re-generation, immortality and fertility. As the emblem of Artemis, it represented feminine purity. In Christianity, the pine cone forms the crown of the Tree of Life.

The third charm, the words `courage & strength' is my reverence to extraordinary women. These two words characterize those who have survived breast cancer and those who have not; those who care for women fighting the disease and those who fight to find the cure for it.dove3.jpg

Both the Doves and Word charm are made in the tradition of stained glass. The image is sandwiched between glass and mirror, soldered together using lead-free solder, then hand polished. The Word charm is made in the same way; words are printed on hand made paper embedded dried flowers and some sparkle, then sandwiched between two pieces of clear glass and soldered together. The pine cone charm and 18" link chain are .925 sterling silver. Note: the glass charms must be kept away from moisture as they are not waterproof. All work is guaranteed and will be repaired at no charge, with the exception of shipping.
